Kalau Present Perfect tadi masih ada hubungannya dengan sekarang, Past Perfect ini murni urusan masa lalu. Sering disebut sebagai “The Past of the Past” (Masa lalunya masa lalu).

Pengertian Dasar

Past Perfect Tense digunakan untuk menunjukkan suatu aksi yang sudah selesai terjadi sebelum aksi lain (yang juga di masa lalu) dimulai.

Bayangkan ada dua kejadian di masa lalu: Kejadian A dan Kejadian B. Kalau Kejadian A selesai duluan sebelum B terjadi, maka Kejadian A harus pakai Past Perfect.

Kapan Kita Menggunakannya?

Menjelaskan urutan kejadian di masa lalu: Untuk menegaskan mana yang duluan beres.
Kalimat Pengandaian (Conditional Type 3): Menyatakan penyesalan atas apa yang tidak terjadi dulu.
Reported Speech: Mengulang ucapan orang lain yang aslinya pakai Past Tense atau Present Perfect.

Kabar baiknya: Apapun subjeknya (I, You, They, We, He, She, It), penandanya cuma satu, yaitu Had. Tidak perlu pusing pilih Have atau Has lagi.

1. Rumus Positif (+)

Subject + had + Verb-3

Example: I had finished my homework when my dad arrived. (Artinya: PR selesai duluan, baru papa datang).

2. Rumus Negatif (-)

Subject + had + not (hadn’t) + Verb-3

Example: They hadn’t started the meeting when I got there.

3. Rumus Tanya (?)

Had + Subject + Verb-3 + ?

Example: Had you eaten before you went to school yesterday?

Pasangan Setia (Past Perfect + Simple Past)

Materi ini hampir selalu muncul dalam satu kalimat bersama Simple Past (Verb 2). Gunakan kata hubung ini sebagai petunjuk:

Before (Sebelum):
- Rumus: [Past Perfect] + before + [Simple Past]
- Contoh: She had cleaned the house before her guests came.
After (Sesudah):
- Rumus: After + [Past Perfect], [Simple Past]
- Contoh: After I had eaten, I felt much better.
When (Ketika):
- Contoh: When the police arrived, the thief had escaped. (Maling kabur duluan sebelum polisi sampai).

Contoh Percakapan Singkat

Situasi: Dua teman sedang membahas kenapa salah satu dari mereka telat menonton konser kemarin.

Bobi: “Why did you miss the opening act of the concert last night?”

Siska: “Because when I arrived at the venue, the show had already started.”

Bobi: “Oh, that’s too bad. Had you checked the schedule before you left?”

Siska: “Yes, I had. But unfortunately, I got stuck in traffic for two hours.”

Bobi: “I see. I had already bought you a drink by the time you entered the hall.”

Siska: “Thank you! I really needed that.”

Ingat konsep “Dua Kejadian Masa Lalu”:

Yang terjadi paling pertama: Had + V3 (Past Perfect)
